A miniature walrus ivory common loon by Iñupiaq carver Al Mayac (1950–2014), who was born on King Island, Alaska. The low body suggests a bird resting on the water, with an upright neck, pointed bill and red eyes. Fine incised lines define the feathers, while closely spaced white markings stand out against the dark back and wings. The underside is signed ‘Al Mayac’ and labeled ‘Common Loon’. The carving measures approximately 3 inches long by 1 inch wide by 1 inch high.
