A brass postal letter balance on a rectangular wooden base, with a circular weight pan and a rectangular letter platform engraved with postal rates. A worn pale instruction plaque is fixed to the front of the base. The accompanying shallow circular pieces are imperial weights, including examples marked 8 oz and 4 oz, with Crane and Parnall & Sons marks visible; a smaller nested weight bears a crown, VR and 55. Four separate cylindrical weights are marked 5, 10, 20 and 50 grams. The scale has tarnish, oxidation, scratches and worn lettering; the wooden base has surface wear, and the pale plaque is stained and heavily rubbed. Dimensions are approximately 9 inches wide by 4.25 inches deep by 4.5 inches high.
