Mary Alice Winchell's "Pillar of Strength" takes the form of a broad bear silhouette with a richly textured surface painted in black, red, gray and cream. Long fur runs along the back, while antlers and a cascading cluster of shells, beads, medallions and other ornaments hang across the body. The layered materials give the flat wall piece a strong sculptural presence. The reverse bears the artist's name, title and date ‘97’, with a hanging wire attached. The body appears to be papier-mâché or a similar composite over a textured support. Overall dimensions are approximately 43 inches wide by 2 inches deep by 32 inches high.
