A finely worked scrimshaw bear portrait by D. Noel Smith on a whale's tooth, raised on a small support above a stepped wooden base. Closely spaced lines define the bear's dense fur, alert ear, eye and slightly open mouth. The initials ‘D.N.S.’ appear beneath the image, and the tooth's cream, gray and brown coloration gives the portrait a varied natural background. Dark fissures and irregular areas are visible near the broad end of the tooth. Overall dimensions, including the base, are approximately 5.5 inches long by 4 inches wide by 6 inches high.
