Two bears face one another with open jaws and extended forepaws in this walrus ivory sculpture by D. Noel Smith. Fine incised fur, carefully modeled mouths and a pebbled ground surface give the close encounter its detail. The carving lifts from a raised, stepped wooden base and is signed ‘D. Noel Smith’ on the underside, with an additional inscribed number. The sculpture is carved from a single walrus tusk. Overall dimensions are approximately 8.5 inches long by 5 inches wide by 5 inches high.
