Keith Appel's "Angular Departure" is a two-panel geometric composition in vivid orange and deep blue, with narrow dark lines separating the color fields. A rectangular panel and a larger trapezoidal panel create an angular outer silhouette as well as divisions within the work. The painted metal surfaces have a pronounced, finely pebbled texture. A reverse label identifies Keith Appel, the title and the year 1983, and notes that the work consists of two pieces. Surface marks are visible on the backs. The larger panel measures approximately 46 inches wide by 34 inches high. Appel (1934–2026) was an Alaska artist whose work was exhibited at the Anchorage Museum and whose public art commissions can be seen across the state.
